He published Catapult, the Biography of Robert A. Monroe (Donning 1989).
He has written a trilogy of tongue-in-cheek novels dealing with the adventures of an American and a Russian senior intelligence officer in the comfortable old world of Cold War espionage. The series starts with Desmond, much of which takes place in Ireland. In Santa Barbara CA 93108 the two big league spooks convulse life on the California Riviera; a sequel, tentatively called Big Rig, is in the works.
Flawed Patriot, Bayard’s biography of William K. Harvey, one of CIA’s outstanding, highly controversial and least-understood Cold War officers appears from Potomac Books (formerly Brasseys) in September 2006.
Stockton is a freelance contributor to the Santa Barbara Independent and the San Luis Obispo New Times.
Bayard teaches in Santa Barbara Community College’s Adult Ed program. In 2001, he started a new series of Adult Ed discussion classes dealing with international tensions, terrorism and religious warfare. The series often draws audiences of 150-200.
He also teaches an Adult Ed writing class. He has ghost-written a number of other books in recent years: Nothing To Fear (Tres Pinos Press 1999); The Reluctant Godfather by Verdun Trione (Books for Pleasure, 2001); Compulsive Obsessive: Behind My Clown Mask by Al Paarmann (Pacific Press 2001); The Color of Wine by Edith Hartnett (Pelagia Press, San Francisco, 2002); From Barrio to Boulevard, the unpublished autobiography of artist Robert Lebron.
He is currently working with Leanne Cooper Elliott on (working title) Of Flesh and Waters, a non-fiction account of her adventures during a considerable journey in South America.
Bayard is divorced, has three grown children and, currently, six grandchildren. He speaks fluent German, rusty French, and smatterings of Greek and Italian.
